The Lowell Joint Education Foundation has received a $1,000 donation from Chevron. Mr. Hector J. Infante, Manager for Chevron's Policy, Government and Public Affairs Division, in Brea, stated that Chevron was honored to help support the Foundation's activities. Foundation President Marty Tourville enthusiastically thanked Mr. Infante and Chevron last night for this most generous gift. Mr. Tourville said this donation will be used to help support academic and technology programs, and the Academic Excellence Day (AED) event, for the students of the Lowell Joint School District. The AED brings students together from all district schools to compete in answering questions in various categories such as math, science, oral presentation spelling, social studies and general knowledge.
Chevron USA, Inc. has a large facility in the city of Brea and is a major refiner and distributer of fuels for California. About 20% of the State's fuel needs are met by Chevron. Started in 1879, as the Pacific Coast Oil Company, and long known as Standard Oil Company of California, Chevron is headquartered in Concord, California. Chevron is the largest company in the State. 1 of every 200 California employees is associated with Chevron. Texaco is a subsidiary of Chevron.
Chevron is very supportive of California schools. The company's educational focus is on the ôSTEM" programs (i.e. science, technology, engineering and math.) The science area includes environmental studies. The company also supports many education foundations such as Project Lead the Way and TechBridge. The latter supports STEM related projects for younger girls. General classroom supply grants by Chevron are provided through the DonorsChoose organization.
Board Member Glenn Sheppard also thanked Mr. Infante and Chevron for their support of the Foundation, and, recounted the many happy days he spent playing baseball and picnicking in the 1950's at the company's Richmond, California employee park.
